The Beauty Locker: Pumpkin Body Butter

imageFall makes me crave all things pumpkin flavored and scented. It smells and tastes so good! One of my favorite fall purchases is Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Body Butter. It’s amazing! All year long, I buy the coconut version, and slather it all over me, but come fall, I stock up on the pumpkin scented lotion. Today, I bought six of them! They don’t last long in the stores at only $4.99, so you need to stock up while you can.

imageThey make great hostess gifts and birthday treats. I have a gift closet downstairs, where I keep things that I can use at the last minute when I need a gift for someone. Lotions and potions make great gifts for everyone. I also buy scented candles, holiday or floral napkins, and cute coasters. I try to never arrive at a party empty handed.

The Beauty Locker: the Skimmies slipshort

imageThings are getting personal today! Foundation garments are so important for a sleek and polished look. I recently discovered Jockey’s Skimmies slipshorts and I’m obsessed. It looks like a pair of Spanx, but the material is soft and not at all binding. The slipshorts are very comfortable and create a smooth line with no VPL (visible panty line). I have always been a die hard slip wearer, so I really like that these “shorts” are a two for one deal. I wear the slipshorts under my skirts at school. We have a two story building on my campus and I have had a few near Marilyn Monroe moments on windy days while walking up the stairs. The slipshorts offer the proper coverage when the weather is not cooperating 💨

imageThe Jockey brand Skimmies can be purchased at Macy’s, Kohl’s and Target and retail for $20 a pair. I found a Jockey outlet at the Carlsbad outlet mall and bought mine for $12 a pair. What a deal!

The Beauty Locker: Kerastase Net a Porter

imageIt’s so fun to travel with friends and see what beauty products they use. When I went to Las Vegas with Lisa in April, I discovered L’oreal’s Miracle Blur and have used it everyday since I tried it. At my sorority reunion a few weekends ago, my friend Chris shared Kerastase’s Net a Porter beach spray with me. This product is awesome. I love the effect of the beach sprays I have used, but they left my hair stiff and sticky. This spray gives you the beachy, relaxed look and you can still run your fingers through your hair.

Here are some of the specifics from the company’s website:

Benefits: A texture spray that creates instant beach waves without the stickiness.
Can also be used to style second day hair.

o Multi-dimensional beach spray
o Buildable texture
o Soft, touchable finish
o UV and heat protection

Hold: Medium and Flexible
Create: Beachy waves or second day hair
Stylist Tip: Use a curling iron for a soft, more defined texture.

The Beauty Locker: Dry shampoo and the Shine brush

imageAnyone who knows me well, knows that I am obsessed with dry shampoo. I used to have a 24 hour hair wash cycle. Around 22 hours after washing my hair it was already greasy, and at 24 hours, I was a hot mess. I had to stop everything and wash my hair. My hairdresser, Cindy Dugger at Parks Salon in Laguna Niguel, had been telling me for years not to wash my hair everyday. She swore that my hair would stay in better condition and my color would last longer. It took a while and a LOT of dry shampoo to train my hair, but she was right. Now, I usually only wash my hair two times a week. I have tried EVERY brand of dry shampoo on the market! High end, low end, and in between have been experimented with on multiple occasions. No matter the fancy brand or canister, I always come back to my favorite drugstore brand, Suave Keratin Infusion. It’s $2.99 and it works great! I buy multiple cans at time and always have it on hand in my desk and gym bag.

Today, when I visited Cindy for a bang trim, I was introduced to the Shine Brush and it takes my dry shampoo obsession to the next level. This brush is designed to evenly distribute the dry shampoo and produce shiny, lovely hair! I felt like Marcia Brady today… 98, 99, 100! I’m already hooked and will be buying two more, one for my desk and one for my gym bag, maybe I will rubber band it to the cans of dry shampoo!

Funny story… about ten years ago, one of my students, Soha Panah, came to me and explained that she was working at a hair salon and that I really needed to come in and do something with my hair. As a result, she introduced me to Cindy and my life was changed! Cindy is the best and I have since followed her to a couple if different salons and will follow her anywhere. And Soha was pretty awesome for reaching out to someone who clearly needed the help!

The Beauty Locker: A store bought salt scrub and a DIY sugar scrub!

I love to exfoliate! It just makes my skin feel so clean and fresh. Today I want to share my two favorite scrubs, one you buy and one you can make at home.

imageMy favorite store-bought scrub is a Lavender Salt Scrub from Trader Joe’s. It’s only $5.99 and it’s better than high priced versions I have tried. I keep it in the shower and use it before I shave my legs. I feel like a get a really close shave if I exfoliate first. I also like to use it after a super sweaty workout. It makes me smell good. Stay tuned to the blog… I might be giving this container away to a follower!

imageSo, if you don’t have a Trader Joe’s nearby, or you want a great DIY scrub recipe, here is a great one. I found this recipe on Pinterest at Jillee’s One Good Thing blog. You only need two ingredients and a jar with a lid. Buy a bag of granulated sugar  and Dawn Ultra with Oil of Olay.  If you want the exact recipe, refer to the link above.  I’m not really a fan of measuring and preferring eye-balling things, so I usually wing it.
imageFirst, get a jar and fill it approximately 2/3 full with sugar.

imageThen, add the Dawn liquid soap and stir. Keep adding sugar and Dawn until you have the right consistency.

imageOnce you have the right mixture, make sure you put the lid on the jar. The sugar will harden and make it difficult to use if you don’t seal the jar. This scrub is great because the Dawn soap produces a great lather and your hands feel super smooth after each use. I keep my jar right next to my kitchen sink and try to use it at least once a day.

This sugar scrub makes a great gift or party favor. Smart and Final has cute plastic containers in their food section or you can pick up cute jars at the 99 Cent Store or Dollar Tree. Make a cute label for the jar or container with instructions for use and you are done.

The Beauty Locker: Dior Addict Lip Glow

imageI have to share another one of my favorite beauty products. Last year I went on a WASC visit in Pasadena and one of the team members had the best lipstick on 24/7. I found out it was Dior Addict Lip Glow and I immediately went down the street to Sephora and bought two tubes, one for my purse and one for my make-up kit. I’m completely addicted! The Beauty Locker: Trader Joe’s Coconut Body Butter

imageFor some reason, I’m not a huge body lotion fan. I have bottles and containers all over my house, but I never use them. I rarely finish a bottle, and sometimes just throw them away. However, my mind has been changed by Trader Joe’s Coconut Body Butter. This product is amazing! My friend, Meredith, brought it as her Sister Day gift to this year’s brunch. I’m hooked! It smells so good, it’s not greasy, and it’s only $4.99. Remember, the Sister Day gift limit is $5! I keep it by my bed and use it before bed and in the morning. I recently bought several more containers to keep in my gift closet (I’ll do a separate post about my gift closet soon!) because it will be a perfect last minute gift. Try it, I’m pretty sure you will love it!

The Beauty Locker: L’oreal Paris Miracle Blur

imageDuring my spring break, I spent a few days in Las Vegas with Lisa, one of my college sorority sisters. It was fun to catch up, shop the outlets and relax by the pool. When we were getting ready to head out for the night, Lisa shared that she swears by L’oreal’s Miracle Blur, instant skin smoother. I tried it and I was hooked! It makes your skin feel fabulous and I’m sure I look at least 10 years younger! I bought mine at WalMart for $19.99… It works better than any other product I have tried and the price is great!

Here’s the description from L’oreal’s website: What Is Miracle Blur? It’s NOT a moisturizer, NOT a foundation, MORE than a primer; it’s the first of-its-kind Instant Skin Smoother. What Does It Do? Miracle Blur instantly erases the look of lines, wrinkles, and pores. Skin instantly looks and feels smooth, leaving a velvet soft matte finish that lasts all day. When Should I Use It? Apply after moisturizer and blend evenly into skin. Wear alone or under foundation. Use all over face, or squeeze a smaller amount for targeted application. Ideal for all skin types. Suggested Skincare Regimen: STEP 1: TREAT *Suggested products: Triple Power Concentrated Serum, Triple Power Eye Treatment STEP 2: MOISTURIZE *Suggested products: Triple Power Deep-Acting Moisturizer STEP 3: FINISH Miracle Blur

The Beauty Locker: Manicure Monday

imageWell-manicured nails are an important part of creating an overall “polished” look.” Pun intended! I am currently obsessed with getting gel manicures. They last for two weeks, and you don’t have to worry about smearing your freshly polished nails when putting your seatbelt on as you are leaving the nail salon. That used to happen all the time! I am a creature of habit, and always get the same color on my nails. OPI Bubble Bath is the perfect nude, just the right amount of color (see top left picture). It’s clean and let’s my accessories shine.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I love glitter. I believe it makes everything better. Glitter nail polish can save a less than perfect manicure or pedicure. A coat of glitter on top of OPI’s Bubble Bath, can extend a manicure a few days if you can’t get into the salon. I used Butter’s Tart with a Heart (see top right photo) on Thursday, since I didn’t have time for a manicure until Sunday. I also like OPI’s Pirouette My Whistle, as another glitter option. If only one finger or toe has a smudge or chip, create an accent nail or toe by only adding the glitter polish where needed.

I always bring my own nail color for a pedicure. All the spin and boot camp classes I take really take a toll on my feet. I usually have to retouch my toes a couple of times to cover up chips. Of course, hot pink is one of my favorite colors for my toes, and Butter’s Disco Biscuit is a really fun one! I like to go simple and classic on my nails and bold on my toes!
